EB Alexandre Herculano is a high school in Lisbon. Education at school consists of three stages: preparatory, basic and high school. Preparatory classes accept children from three to five years old. Their training is optional. Basic school education is received for nine years – from the age of 6 to 15 years. For the next three years, students study according to the general program if they are going to enter universities, or according to the technological program if they plan to work immediately after school. The school year in Portuguese schools begins in mid-September. There is no fixed date: the Portuguese Ministry of Education recommends when to start studies, for example from 15 to 20 September, and the school administration independently determines the date of the first classes.
